$800 million port renovation fund is almost ready: Fed Govt
The federal government has stated that the more than $800 million required for the repair of the country’s ports is nearly complete.
Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, made the announcement on Thursday in Apapa, Lagos, at the Nigerian Ports Authority’s presentation and inauguration of seven security patrol boats.
In November, the Nigerian Port Authority announced that it would launch a $800 million rehabilitation plan for all Nigerian ports in the first quarter of 2024, citing the fact that almost all Nigerian ports require rehabilitation and that the NPA is launching a significant overhaul, beginning with the Tincan Island and Apapa Port in Lagos.
However, Oyetola emphasised the importance of modernising the ports to meet global standards.
“Again we are modernising the ports, we want to be able to compete with any port in the world. We want the vessel’s turnaround time to be reduced and I think deliberately we are doing that.
“We need to commend the President. The fund for the rehabilitation of the port is almost ready and we are going to commence the rehabilitation any time soon.” Oyetola said.
