Akwa Ibom: Land lady baths tenant with hot water, pepper over house rent
Amaka Okonkwo, a lady, is accused of pouring boiling water laced with pepper on her tenant because she couldn’t pay the rent.
Imabong William, the renter, reportedly requested time to find a new apartment after receiving a vacate notice for failing to pay a new rent mandated for building tenants, according to Platinum Times, before her landlady doused her in hot water and pepper.
The event took place on Thursday in the Enugwu-Ukwu community of the state’s Njikoka Local Government Area.
According to local sources, the victim, who is from the state of Akwa Ibom, was already undergoing treatment at an unidentified hospital after being rescued by neighbors.
Amaka, her landlord, was also detained by the police when neighbors complained about her behavior at the Nimo police station.
When visiting the victim, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, the Anambra State Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, reported that the victim said she was ordered to leave the property because she couldn’t afford the increased rent.
She added that she had asked for some time to find a new place, but on Thursday, when she was washing her clothes, the aforementioned landlady turned around and threw hot water and pepper on her from behind.
Obinabo voiced her disappointment in the occurrence and vowed to bring about justice for the victim.
She cautioned that anyone found guilty of assault of any kind will not be treated lightly by the Anambra State Government and continued by advising the public to always report crimes and misdemeanors through the proper channels for prompt intervention.
