Zamfara reports 1188 cases of cholera, 40 fatalities

Since the diseases’ initial outbreak in December 2022, Zamfara State has registered 1188 cases of cholera and 50 cases of diphtheria across its 14 local government districts.
Dr. Aishatu Anka, the State’s Commissioner for Health, said this on Wednesday while giving medical supplies at the Shagari Cholera Treatment Center in Gusau.
In the state’s Gusau Anka, Bakura, and Bukkuyum local government regions, according to Anka, cholera is a common disease.
The state’s governor, Dauda Lawan, visited a few patients at Anka General Hospital, and now, according to the commissioner, “I am here at Shagari Cholera Treatment Centre to equally assess the patient’s response to treatment.”
Of the 1188 cases that have been documented so far, she claimed 40 people have died.
She also verified the appearance of 50 cases of diphtheria, with two fatalities reported.
According to the commissioner, an investigation is being carried out to determine how widely the illness has spread.
Anka praised the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention for opening a state office at the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau and advised localities to ensure environmental sanitation and practice good personal hygiene.
She urged the populace to ensure they only drank clean water because doing so would allow the state to effectively stop the disease’s further spread.
