PDP member Uche Ugwu elected speaker in LP-controlled Enugu assembly
The speaker of the Enugu house of assembly has been elected as Hon. Uche Ugwu, who is a PDP member.
The 8th assembly of the state was inaugurated on Tuesday, and Ugwu was elected by a unanimous vote.
Iloabuchi Aniagu, who represents Nkanu-west, proposed the candidate for the Udi-north district, and Chukwudi Nwankwo, who represents Awgu-south, seconded his nomination.
In the seventh assembly, Ugwu served as the deputy speaker of the house.
The Igboetiti-east constituency’s Ezenta Ezeani was chosen as the house’s deputy speaker.
Jane Eneh of the Awgu-north constituency proposed Ezeani, and Okey Mba seconded her.
14 members of the LP and 10 members of the PDP make up the 24 members of the house.
There were rumors that the standing rules of the house had barred all 14 LP legislators from important posts in the legislature.
Platinum Times notes that only ranking members of the house may become speaker or deputy speaker under the Enugu assembly standing rules.
The 14 LP parliamentarians were all newly elected, disqualifying them from the competition.
