Nov. 11 Governorship poll: Army kick-starts ‘Operation Safe Conduct’ in Imo
In anticipation of the governorship election on Saturday, “Operation Safe Conduct” was introduced in Imo State on Wednesday by Maj-Gen Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding of the 82nd Division of the Nigerian Army.
The short ceremony was conducted by Dada at the Nigerian Army’s 34 Artillery Brigade in Obinze, Owerri.
“A measure by the Nigerian military to ensure the security of all stakeholders in the electioneering process,” was how he put the operation.
Additionally, the GOC declared that prior to the election, officers in each of the state’s three senatorial districts would put on a show of force.
According to him, the goal of the exercise was to regain the trust of the voters and reassure them that there would be sufficient protection before the election.
The GOC expressed gratitude to Lt-Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, for his assurances of officers’ general welfare while they were on election duty as well as for his moral and practical support.
In addition, he counseled his officers to collaborate with other security services, stay impartial, and familiarize themselves with the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct in preparation for election duties.
“Ours is to ensure that people come out and discharge their duties seamlessly while remaining nonpartisan.
“You must protect all INEC officials and election materials, but don’t touch the materials.
“I will not accept any excuses for any lapses.
“Do not accept any tip-off from anybody; if you are found wanting, you will be court-martialed,” he said.
