Niger State: NSEMA confirms death of 10, following Boat mishap

Ten people are said to have killed in a boat accident in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
Farida Muntari, Sharhabila Sagir, Abubakar Sadiq, Na’ima Ibrahim, Amina, Safaratu Ibrahim, Sadiq Ibrahim, and Rafiya Yakubu were among those killed, as were two unnamed victims.
Strong waves and water hyacinth are said to have caused the disaster on Thursday between 1:30 and 2 p.m.
The boat capsized while transporting 34 passengers from Zangoro Bassa-Kukoki Ward terminal to Gijiwa-Kato Ward terminal in Shiroro LG, according to DAILY POST.
In a statement signed by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA),
Ibrahim Audu Hussani, Head of Information and Special Duties, verified the boat disaster.
Hussaini stated that the mishap was caused by water hyacinth and strong waves during a visit to the area with the Shiroro LG chairman. A grafting tree was also found as a contributing component to the development.
He added that the boat was carrying 34 individuals, including 10 men, 14 women, and 10 children.
Hussani stated that at the time, a total of 24 survivors had been discovered, with efforts to gather more information underway.
Search-and-rescue activities are still underway, according to him.
The boat’s six drivers were identified as Dahiru Yusuf, Sa’idu Shu’aibu, Ahmadu Garba, Sa’idu Garba, Abdulaziz Yahaya, and Lukuman Sani, according to NSEMA.
