Gov Zulum shuts down Monguno IDP camp
Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State, has ordered the immediate closure of the internally displaced persons (IDP) camp located within Government Senior Science Secondary School (GSSSS), Monguno, to allow for the school’s rehabilitation and subsequent resumption of academic activities.
Zulum issued the order on Tuesday during an inspection visit to the camp to examine the amount of destruction caused by Boko Haram attacks and IDPs’ protracted use.
GSSSS Monguno houses IDPs displaced by Boko Haram rebels from Kukawa, Nganzai, Marte, and Guzamala.
According to Zulum, the IDPs will be transferred to 1,000 resettlement houses created for individuals afflicted by the decade-long Boko Haram insurgency.
Monguno’s 1,000 dwellings are part of Zulum’s administration’s housing intervention of approximately 10,000 resettlement houses built since 2019.
The governor also intimated that IDPs from communities and villages that have achieved relative calm, particularly those from Kekeno, Mile 90, and Yoyo, will be returned.
“We will return those of you from communities that have attained relative peace; everyone that is willing to return will be provided with a resettlement package to pick up the pieces of their lives,” Zulum said.
