Residents of Lagos protest poor roads amid gridlock

On Wednesday, locals along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway staged protests to call for the rapid repair of a few road segments.
Under the direction of human rights advocates and with the support of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, the demonstrators bemoaned the terrible condition of the road and the government’s disregard for it.
They further claimed that numerous accidents resulting in injuries and fatalities were brought on by the crumbled road.
However, because the demonstrators had blocked the Meiran end of the road, traffic was stuck and there was congestion all along the axis.
According to Alex Omotehinse, President of the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights, there has been a rise in road casualties in recent weeks.
Omotehinse called on the state government to grade the roads in the interim before starting a proper repair, while accusing the security personnel of abusing drivers who travel one way by using the poor quality roads.
“The government should consider road users, for now, to avoid this bad road. They should be allowed to use the one-way now and give us traffic officers that can control the road users so that there will be no room for abuse,” he added.
Some victims of road accidents in the community also joined the protest as they expressed their support for the development.
