Court orders FG to pay N100m damages to Emefiele over violation of human right

The court further ordered the Federal Government and its agents not to arrest or detain Emefiele again without a court order.

Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has awarded 100 million naira against the Federal Government in favor of Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for violating his right to personal liberty.

The Court also found his lengthy detention without trial a clear breach of his fundamental rights.

It also prohibited the federal government and its agents from re-arresting or detaining Emefiele without a court order.

The decision was issued in a fundamental human rights claim filed by the former CBN governor following his protracted imprisonment by the Department of State Services.

He had requested the court to order the respondents to pay N1 billion in damages and to stop further arresting and detaining him.

The former CBN chief was arrested on June 10, 2023, shortly after being suspended by President Bola Tinubu.
