A significant security raid in Rivers state organized by police reportedly resulted in the death of notorious cult leader Gift Okpara, aka 2Baba, the key suspect in the gruesome murder of former Divisional Police Officer SP Bako Angbashim.
On Saturday afternoon, police and other security agencies were said to have coordinated a land and aerial raid on the identified hideout of the Iceland cult leader and his gang in Idu-Ekpeye, Ahoada East local government area of the state, with 2Baba feared dead as a result of the operation.
In September 2023, 2Baba’s gang ambushed and captured Angbashim in the Odiemudie community of the Ahoada East LGA of the State.
The DPO was led into the wilderness, where he was killed, his body dismembered, and filmed by the cultists.
A top police source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, revealed that 2Baba was repeatedly beaten during the operation.
He stated, “2Baba was shot multiple times, as were some of his loyalists.
“2Baba collapsed on the ground, but some of his boys swiftly dragged him away. The police are currently moving in to collect his body.”
Another source, who identified himself as Obi, stated that he spotted around 15 trucks and an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) during the operation.
Though there was no official confirmation of 2Baba’s death, the whole Ahoada community was stated to be in jubilation after claims that the notorious cult leader was believed to be dead.
The indigenes lavished special admiration on the state Commissioner of Police, CP. Olatunji Disu, for his tireless efforts to combat terrorism in the area.
When reached, Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the State Police Command, promised to provide input on the developments.
