Tragedy as 5-story building collapses in Onitsha, many reportedly trapped
An unknown number of people may have been trapped when a five-story building under construction fell in Basden Street, Fegge, in the commercial metropolis of Onitsha, Anambra State.
It was reported that the structure, which was intended to serve commercial purposes once completed, fell in the early hours of Sunday while some construction workers were on the last floor.
An excavator was soon dispatched to the scene to begin the evacuation of rubble and possible rescue efforts for any trapped victims.
The cause of the collapse has yet to be determined, but as of the time of reporting this article on Sunday, a source at the scene reported that one person had been recovered as rescue activities continued at the site.
However, specifics of the incident remain vague, as DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, could not be reached for confirmation.
He has not returned phone calls at the time of filing this report.
Chinyere Nworah, the Public Relations Officer for Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, has yet to respond to phone inquiries.
