Use of sitting Judges at election petition tribunal is condemnable – Afe Babalola

Chief Babalola claimed that the Nigerian Judiciary required a complete revamp and claimed that for a number of recent months, the courts had been unable to convene and hear cases.

“We need a new constitution to allow all parts to develop on its own parts for rapid development.

The Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, spoke at the event and urged the federal government to steer clear of sentiments as Nigeria moves toward democracy.

According to Bishop Kukah, sustaining democratic principles needed selfless work that shouldn’t be motivated by sentiment in order to promote growth.

Kukah spoke on the lecture: “The Future of Constitutional Democracy in Nigeria: Imperative of a New Constitutional Order”.

According to the cleric, “Most leaders have only limited development to their home town which according to him, does not project democracy.”

“I must say that Daura, in Kastina has enjoyed development over time owing to the fact that it is the home town of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari.

It is disheartening to even know that even Kastina, the state as a whole, is not even close to development despite Daura being parts of its domain. This does not speak well of our democracy.”

Bishop Kukah said: “we cannot continue to run a skewed country and pretend as if we are in a democracy”, adding that Nigeria needed to grow democratically and develop politically.

The Christian human rights activist asserted that every federal institution should reflect Nigeria as a whole and that inequity in the nation shouldn’t be reinforced.

Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, who decried the extent of corruption in Nigeria urged President Bola Tinubu to take the lead in the fight against corruption.

The event’s chairman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, declared that the majority of those who are meant to safeguard Nigeria’s constitution are instead destroying democracy.

“Everybody is supposed to enjoy the constitution and our democracy is also to deliver the dividends of democracy to citizens. Leadership and democracy are for character, understanding, knowledge and sacrifice, if these are not there, we are deceiving ourselves.”

The governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, praised Afe Babalola for giving the country’s hopeless a voice and for what he has done for humanity.
