Abuja-based lawyer lands in court over failure to pay ashawo

The police have charged Ekunife Emmanuel, an Abuja-based lawyer, for refusing to pay a commercial s3x worker.
The police charged Emmanuel of Jahi Abuja with criminal breach of trust, assault, causing harm, and instigating unrest, which he denied.
The prosecuting counsel, Olisaemeka Okeke, told the court on Wednesday that the complainant, Queeneth John, a s3x worker in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, reported to the Asokoro police station on March 12, 2024.
She claimed that on March 11, at 10 p.m., Emmanuel approached her as she was selling items in Wuse. He took her to Banex Plaza and promised to pay her for s3x. However, when everything was over, he did not give her the money as promised.
He stated that during the procedure, the defendant began assaulting the plaintiff, resulting in bruises all over her body.
Okeke claimed the offense violated Sections 312, 365, 244, and 114 of the Penal Code.
The court, Aliyu Kagarko, granted Emmanuel N1 million bail with a commensurate surety.
“I hereby grant the defendant bail in line with section 165 (2) of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 to deposit 10 percent of the bail sum at the court registry pending the determination of the case,” the judge wrote.
He stipulated that the surety must be a legal practitioner with at least five years of experience, hold a valid call to bar certificate, and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He postponed the matter to April 18, 2024, for additional proceedings.
