Account for N200bn education allocations collected by Okowa – Court orders Delta Govt

The Delta State Government has been asked by the Federal High Court in Lagos to account for N200 billion in education monies that were allocated and collected by the former governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.
This information was released on Sunday by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) through a statement from Kolawole Oluwadare, the project’s deputy director.
According to SERAP, the Okowa administration obtained the N200 billion from the state’s Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The development follows SERAP’s filing of a Freedom of Information lawsuit.
The group disclosed that Justice Daniel Osiagor delivered the ruling.
As a result, the court mandated that Sheriff Oborevwori, the current governor of Delta State, divulge specifics on the financial allocation from 2015 to 2019.
“SERAP has a cognizable legal right to inquire about and learn how public institutions manage public funds,” concluded Justice Osiagor. I must add that it is the responsibility of every citizen to demand accountability and openness in the management of public institutions.
