Appeal Court judgement: 16 sacked Plateau lawmakers storm Assembly, insist on sitting

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members of the Plateau State House of Assembly who were dismissed by the Court of Appeal have arrived at the Assembly Complex, demanding admission to Tuesday’s sitting.

According to Platinum Times, the Appeal Court dismissed the 16 members because the Plateau State PDP lacked the structure to sponsor candidates in the previous general election.

Despite their dismissal, the MPs promised to rejoin their colleagues during the Assembly’s resumed sitting on Tuesday.

The expelled lawmakers, led by Ishaku Maren, argue that the Supreme Court decision that confirmed Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s election also qualified them to continue serving in the Assembly.

The legislators stated that they would resume their duties as parliamentarians on Tuesday, when the House is set to return after its two-month break.

However, eight members of the House of Assembly sat, and during the session, the Speaker addressed the fired parliamentarians, imploring them to maintain the status quo until all legal options were considered.

Meanwhile, security personnel had blocked off the Assembly Complex as a precautionary step against the breakdown of law and order.
