BEDC set to restore light to Ekiti LGAs, after 10 years of blackout
After more than ten years of no power, the Benin energy Distribution Company (BEDC) has vowed to start supplying energy to Ayekire LCDA and Ekiti East LGA.
The development was a result of a recent tripartite conference held in Ado Ekiti by the Ekiti State Government, which also included BEDC representatives and members of the affected villages’ kings or representatives.
Prof. Bolaji Aluko, commissioner for infrastructure and public utilities in Ekiti State, revealed that the conference was successful in resolving any grey areas as a step toward the region’s eventual reconnection to the national grid.
The commissioner outlined how the government’s efforts to bring electricity back to the region fulfilled campaign pledges made by Governor Biodun Oyebanji and demonstrated the administration’s dedication to the welfare of the populace.

In a statement released following the meeting, all parties expressed their commitment to bringing energy back to the affected districts, and Governor Oyebanji was praised for his efforts to put an end to the region’s residents’ protracted period of darkness.
At the meeting, agreement was also achieved on the provision of post-paid meters, the formation of a team to plan a consumer census and audit committee, and the payment of electricity bills following an inventory of the homes in the affected districts.
While stating that Gov. Oyebanji’s administration would not tolerate any effort to avoid paying utility bills, it encouraged BEDC to take into account canceling the bad debts owed by the towns.
Speaking on behalf of other traditional leaders in the afflicted areas, the Owaateju of Iro Ayeteju, Oba G.S.O. Ajayi, thanked the state government for its efforts to bring light back to the area.
Mrs. Moyo Akin Afuye, the regional manager of Benin Electricity Distribution Company, vowed BEDC’s willingness to collaborate with all stakeholders to improve the quality of life in the region.
