Benue varsity ASUU ends strike after six weeks

The Benue State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its current strike.

According to a statement published on Wednesday in Makurdi by Kwaghfan Tarnongo and Terrumun Gajir, the organization’s Chairman and Secretary, respectively.

Platinum Times reports that on February 1, the university ASUU went on strike over the failure to effectuate their promotions, the payment of earned academic allowances, EAA, and the annual step raise, among other demands.

The union, on the other hand, stated that their decision to cease the strike was prompted by the intervention of state Governor Hyacinth Alia, who vowed to fulfill the union’s requests.

“Congress was also briefed on the personal intervention of our governor and Visitor to the university; he personally appealed and assured us that all the grievances will be resolved as soon as the strike is suspended.

“Congress therefore mandated the officials to go into a tripartite agreement. The agreement addresses the issues that led to the strike.

”The state government has assured us that the agreement will be fully implemented.

“Thus, congress resolved to suspend the strike owing to the intervention of the governor and the union believes in the ability of the governor to fully, expeditiously, and satisfactorily implement the agreement reached,” the statement said.
