BREAKING: Supreme Court declines release of Nnamdi Kanu

The Supreme Court declined on Friday to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

According to Platinumtimes, the Supreme Court, in a decision given by Justice Emmanuel Agim but written by Justice Garba Lawal, nullified and set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal, which ordered Kanu’s freedom and dropped the terrorism charges against him in October last year.

The Supreme Court ruled that, while the Nigerian government recklessly and illegally deported Kanu from Kenya, such an illegal act did not preclude any court from proceeding with the trial.

Justice Lawal stated that no Nigerian law was cited in the suit seeking Kanu’s release on the basis of mere unlawful abduction from Kenya, and that the remedy for such action at the moment is for Kanu to file a civil matter against such act rather than removing the powers of courts to continue with his trial for alleged criminal charges.

Kanu was then directed by the Supreme Court to go and defend himself in the remaining 7 counts of terrorist allegations against him.
