Court fixes August 15 for hearing of Emefiele’s application over continued DSS detention
Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has applications pertaining to his custody set for hearing on August 15 by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
The hearing of the applications submitted by the federal government and Emefiele’s attorneys was postponed on Thursday by the presiding judge, Nicholas Oweibo.
Remember that Emefiele was granted bail in the amount of N20 million when he was arraigned on a two-count charge involving the “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Ikoyi on July 25.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) will house Emefiele while the terms of his bail are being met, per the judge Oweibo’s decision.
However, the Department of State Services (DSS) asked that Emefiele be returned to its care, which resulted in the confrontation between the secret police and prison guards.
DSS re-arrested Emefiele on the court grounds after the confrontation.
The secret service then made a request to keep the suspended CBN governor in custody before a federal capital territory high court.
The application was dismissed after the service withdrew it due to jurisdictional issues.
On August 3, the federal government also submitted a request to the federal high court in Lagos asking for permission to appeal the decision granting Emefiele bail.
