Customs begin auction of rice to Lagos residents (video)
On Friday, Lagos State residents began purchasing rice at a discount from the Nigeria Customs Service.
A video uploaded on Nigeria Info FM’s X account on Friday showed citizens standing in a long line to buy rice.
According to Nigeria Info FM, a 25kg bag of rice sells for N10,000.
The caption read, “Lagosians queue up to buy rice seized by The Nigerian Customs Service.
“A bag of rice (25kg) is reportedly being sold for #10,000.
“The Customs Service says it secured approval from the government to dispose of the seized food items to needy Nigerians at discounted prices.”
This media reports that Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, on Thursday while announcing that the distribution of seized foods would commence on Friday, stated that eligible persons must provide a Nigerian Identification Number.
He added that customs officers were banned from partaking in the exercise, adding that the rice would come in 25kg, which would be sold for N10,000.
Beneficiaries were also warned not to resell the food items.
