EFCC officials allegedly storm FUTA, arrest students in midnight operation

Men suspected of working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission were alleged to have carried out a midnight operation at the Federal University of Technology in Akure, Ondo State.

Students’ lodges were reportedly raided at around 2 a.m.

Some students have resorted to social media, releasing footage and claiming that the men broke into rooms and arrested several students.

Social media videos show smashed window frames from what appears to be a forceful entrance attempt.

One social media user, J Brandy, tweeted,

“I thought they said the EFCC shouldn’t raid at night again. This hostel (Celebrity Lodge, FUTA) is just beside me. When will this become endemic? “EFCC (officials) are moving like thieves at night!”

One of the films circulating online shows a man wearing an EFFC jacket.

In November, the EFCC’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, ordered that night sting operations be halted.

He issued this direction following the arrest of suspected online fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State, by EFCC operatives, which provoked widespread uproar.

When the agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, was called about the incident on Wednesday, he urged our correspondent to call back within 20 minutes.

He has not returned his calls as of the time of publication.
