Eight perish in Benue boat mishap

On Sunday, a boat carrying people of  Ibi local government council of Taraba reportedly capsized.

The incident occurred at Anyeshi village, which is located close Benue State.

The disaster comes just two weeks after a similar occurrence in the state’s Karim-Lamido Local Government Area, in which over 50 passengers were killed.

It will be noted that a locally built boat transporting traders from Mayoranewo market in Taraba’s Ardo-Kola local government council to Karim-Lamido council recently capsized in the state’s Binneri village.

Confirming the catastrophe, Isa Mohammed, the Head of Local Government Administration in Ibi council, stated over eight people were killed.

Isa, who claimed the disaster occurred in neighboring Benue rather than Taraba, confessed that all of the passengers on board were from the Ibi council.

The HOLGA, which was unable to determine the number of passengers on board at the time of the accident, cautioned the council’s citizens to refrain from embarking on night journeys on waterways.

Around 4:30 p.m., the passengers were supposed to be on their way to a neighboring market in Anyeshi village.

Some Ibi residents who spoke to DAILY POST revealed that the majority of the victims are council employees.

“Though the incident took place in the nearby Benue State, I must confess to you that almost all the passengers are indigenes of Ibi local government council,” one of them said.
