Flood sacks Nasarawa community, destroys over 60 houses

Nasarawa State has been devastated by a severe flood in two local government areas, destroying over 60 houses and properties worth millions of naira.

Zachary Allumaga, Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency, announced the news at a press conference in Lafia on Saturday.

He detailed the horrific flood calamity that left many residents homeless and their things in ruins.

The water in Lafia overtook the student’s residential area (Off-campus) at the Federal University of Lafia, causing havoc on personal property such as computers, mattresses, books, food items, and other valuables, according to DAILY POST.

While discussing a second flooding disaster that occurred in Toto LGA, the director stated that roughly 60 houses were drowned and a large number of properties were destroyed.

He blamed flooding in Toto LGA on gully erosion.

Allumaga promised that arrangements were underway to give relief goods to impacted villages in Toto LGA and the Federal University off-campus area in Lafia.

The NASEMA DG guaranteed that the agency will continue to perform its mandate, which includes disaster prevention and mitigation measures such as awareness campaigns, victim evacuation, and the distribution of relief items to disaster-affected regions.
