Gbajabiamila, Laguda cast vote as low turnout mars Lagos bye-election
Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, and Kayode Laguda, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, voted in their respective polling units in the ongoing re-run election for Surulere Federal Constituency 1 in Lagos State.
Laguda voted at Randle Avenue Primary School PU 009 in Shitta/Ogunlana Ward.
As of the time of submitting this report, the ongoing byelection had a low voter turnout.
The Nation watched citizens exercising their right to vote in some of the polling stations visited, surrounded by security personnel.
Some voters who talked with The Nation said they expect a calm election, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold a free and fair vote.
Another party agent, who spoke with The Nation, regretted the low attendance so far and urged voters to vote.
The Nation reports. Candidates vying to replace Gbajabiamila in the House of Representatives include Laguda of the APC, Jerry Afemikhe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Adeola Adebanjo of the Labour Party (LP).
Following his vote, Laguda hailed the process as peaceful and fair.
In response to the poor turnout, Laguda expressed hope that more people will use their franchise.
Polling Units 009 and 054 at Randle Avenue Primary School in Surulere have seen relatively low turnout since the polling procedure began at 8:35 a.m.
Security personnel from the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, and Nigeria Army set up multiple roadblocks to limit movement in and around Surulere.
Patrol vans and armored carriers carrying armed security agents were seen monitoring streets and roads around the constituency.
