Gov Yusuf sets up committee to investigate theft of govt assets, embezzlement of public funds

Governor of Kano State Abba Kabir Yusuf has established two judicial panels to look into cases of political violence and embezzlement of public funds in the state.

The two panels are to unravel those involved in misappropriation of public properties and political violence between 2015 to 2023.

Inaugurating the panels on Thursday, the governor vowed to bring those indicted for the crimes to book.

He noted that investigating the misappropriation of public assets was part of the promises he made during his inauguration.

He said, “Political violence is a major setback to democracy worldwide. It leads to loss of lives and property as well as mistrust on the part of the people and those in power.

“The disturbing cases of political killings especially in 2023 must not be swept under the carpet, this is to ensure we prevent future occurrences,” he said.

The panel that will investigate political violence and missing persons from 2015-2023 will be headed by Justice Zuwaira Yusuf.

“We expect them to unravel the criminal network involved and unmask the sponsors to face justice. Find its root causes and find out where violence is associated with 2015, 2019 and 2013 elections,” the governor said.

Justice Faruk Lawan will head the panel tasked with investigating cases of misappropriation of public properties and assets.

The governor charged the panel to identify cases of misappropriation of public properties and assets, especially by the last administration, within and outside the state.

Yusuf, in the same vein, emphasized that the setting up of the panels was neither political nor targeted at any individual.

The panels were directed to turn in their reports in three months.
