Gunmen invade Benue communities, kill 8 in fresh attack

On Saturday, suspected herdsmen reportedly attacked multiple towns in  Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, killing eight people.

According to reports, inhabitants in vulnerable areas like as Ogwumogbo, Ikpele, and Ejima have fled their homes as insecurity persists in the region.

Over the last two weeks, armed herdsmen have repeatedly attacked Agatu, killing both troops and residents.

According to Platinum Times, on January 18, 2024, five persons were ambushed and killed, including three servicemen.

Major General Sunday Igbinowanhia, Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), verified the incident, claiming that the forces engaged in a three-hour fire duel and effectively repelled the armed herders.

Former Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism Mike Inalegwu reported another attack just five days later, which resulted in the deaths of two people.

The latest incident on Saturday, the third in two weeks, reportedly lasted four hours and involved armed herders raiding numerous towns.

Residents of Ogwumogbo, Ikpele, and Ejima were compelled to evacuate their homes for safety in the bush.

Godwin Edoh, a member of the Benue State Assembly who represents the Agatu state seat, expressed frustration with the ongoing violence, noting that despite all efforts, the killings continue.

“It’s true. These attackers invaded the three communities of Ogwumogbo, Ikpele, and Ejima on Saturday between 12 and 4 pm, and they sacked the people. Eight people were killed in this latest attack, and several more are still missing.

“No one is coming to our aid, and the governor is quiet. I do not understand this,” he stated.

When contacted, Benue State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, said she did not have the specific report.
