Former President Goodluck Jonathan has arrive in Liberia to meet with President George Weah and President-elect Joseph Boakai as the transition process gets underway.
In Liberia’s recently finished presidential election, Boakai received 50.89 percent of the vote after counting votes from more than 99 percent of polling locations, while Weah received 49.11 percent.
On Friday, November 24, Jonathan posted images of his meeting with Liberian leaders to his X account.
He led a West African mission to monitor the country’s general election in 2023.
He wrote,
“In continuation of the West African Elders Forum ( #TheWAEF ) Election Mediation Mission to Liberia’s last general elections, I returned to Monrovia today to meet with His Excellency President George Weah and the President-Elect His Excellency Joseph Boakai, as they begin processes for a peaceful power transition.
“My consultations with both of them was quite reassuring. I am pleased with their sense of co-operation, purpose and patriotism as well as their determination to rally all Liberians to work for the unity, peace and progress of the country.
“I believe all of West Africa has something to learn from Liberian’s elections, especially with President Weah’s selflessness in calling to concede and congratulate the President-elect and the demonstrated commitment of all stakeholders to put the interest of the country above personal or party considerations.”
