Just In: Appeal Court rules against Banky W, affirms LP’s Thaddeus Atta election

The Appeal Court has declared the Labour Party candidate, Thaddeus Atta, as the duly elected House of Representatives member representing Eti Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos State.
Platinum Times reports that the National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, had in September declared the election inconclusive.
The tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a supplementary election within 90 days in 33 polling units where elections were not held.
However, the Appeal Court on Tuesday overturned the tribunal’s directive and ruled that the elections were conclusive.
This legal battle involved famous Nigerian singer and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Bankole Wellington, known as Banky W, who was declared the runner-up in the February 2023 election, and Ibrahim Babajide Obanikoro, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Eti Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos State is represented by Thaddeus Atta, the candidate of the Labour Party, who was legitimately elected to the House of Representatives. This decision was made by the Appeal Court.
According to Platinum Times, the election was ruled inconclusive in September by the National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal, which is located in Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.
In 33 polling places where elections were not held, the tribunal directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold a second election within ninety-days.
On Tuesday, however, the Appeal Court declared that the elections were definitive and reversed the tribunal’s order.
In this legal dispute were All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Ibrahim Babajide Obanikoro and well-known Nigerian singer Bankole Wellington, also known as Banky W, a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who was pronounced the runner-up in the February 2023 election.
