Just In: Prison waders, DSS officials fight over Emefiele in Court (video)
Drama unfolded as Department of State Services agents and Ikoyi Correctional Center agents fought at the Federal High Court in Lagos over who would take custody of suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele.
When the case was postponed till November 14 and Emefiele was granted bail by Justice Nicholas Oweibo, some DSS agents were visible in prominent locations and close to the court door.
Emefiele was granted bail on Tuesday in the amount of N20 million by Justice Oweibo after being accused of illegally possessing guns.
Because the D Defendant was charged with a bailable offense, the judge agreed with the defense attorney’s argument.
The court decided that in order to deny bail, one of the conditions listed in Section 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act must be present.
The prosecution had not presented the court with such circumstances, the court ruled.
The defendant was then granted bail by the court in the amount of N20 million with one surety in the same amount.
According to the court, the surety is required to sign an affidavit of means and own a piece of land.
He ordered that the defendant be held in the custody of the prison system until bail was fully satisfied.
The DSS attempted to rearrest him, but Ikoyi Prison staff members refused, which resulted in an altercation and the start of fisticuffs.
