JUST IN: Supreme Court gives update on commencement of hearing on Kano guber petition

On Thursday, December 21st, the Supreme Court has set a hearing on the Kano Governorship Election Petition.
The New Nigeria People’s Party’s (NNPP) Governor Kabir Abba Yusuf is challenging the Appeal Court’s decision to sustain the tribunal’s order to remove him and declare Dr Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the March 11 governorship election.
Governor Yusuf’s counsel, Barrister Bashir Tudun Waziri, stated that the hearing notice was sent to the legal team defending the governor and his party.
Governor Yusuf was not a registered member of the NNPP at the time he stood for governor, according to the petition Court’s three-person panel.
However, a Certified True Copy of the judgment that surfaced a few days later included a contradicting ruling.
In one of the concluding paragraphs on Page 68 of the lead judgment delivered by Justice Moore Adumein, the judge stated, “I will conclude by stating that the live issues in this appeal are hereby resolved in favour of the 1st respondent and against the appellant.”
Both the APC and the NNPP claimed that the ruling confirmed their election triumph.
However, the NNPP filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, challenging the Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold the verdict of the governorship election petition tribunal.
Gboyega Awomolo, SAN, counsel for the appellant, offered ten grounds for contesting the appeal.
According to him, the appellant is attempting to invalidate “the entire judgment of the Court of Appeal save and except the conclusion and orders at page 67 of the duly Certified True Copy, CTC including the order as to cost favourable to the appellant.”
