Lagos Govt. issues warnings to churches, mosque, nightclubs, others over noise pollution

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has issued noise pollution warnings to churches, mosques, nightclubs, pubs, and event venues.

Churches, mosques, and nightclubs were advised in a statement on LASEPA’s X account to abide by the recommended sound levels in order to minimize noise pollution.

It made the argument that communities’ peace and wellbeing are seriously threatened by excessive noise.

“Ensure that sound levels are maintained within acceptable limits as a gesture of consideration for our neighbourhoods.

“Together, we can enjoy our spaces without causing undue disturbance and foster a quieter and more peaceful environment.”

To support its warning, the agency called the attention of the affected groups to Section 199 Sub-section k, l and m of the Lagos State law, especially in relation to noise pollution.

“Section 199 Sub-section k, l and m the agency shall have the power to make regulations on (k) Noise standard for any product or class which emits noise capable of adversely affecting the public health or welfare; (l) Noise standard for any product or class, which is sold wholly or in part on the basis of its effectiveness in reducing noise; (m) The agency shall have the power to make regulations on noise pollution standards in any residential, religious, commercial, industrial or any other premises with a view to controlling the psychological and physiological effects of noise on human and the effects of noise on domestic animals, wildlife and property.“
