Many missing as bandits invade Benue, kill seven

Seven people were reportedly slain on Sunday in a renewed attack by gunmen suspected of being Fulani herders in Benue’s Logo Local Government Area.
The accused armed herders are said to have ambushed a commercial van between Arufu and Chembe villages on Sunday, shooting at passengers.
The terrorists were then claimed to have stormed the Mchia village at night and killed seven people.
Several others were alleged to have gone missing during the invasion.
Anawah Joseph, a community leader who spoke with our correspondent over the phone on Monday, revealed that the assailants set up an ambush on the road and shot at a commercial vehicle between Arufu and Chembe villages.
He stated, “On Sunday, armed Fulani herders collaborated with Jukun militias to shoot at a commercial van headed to Lorza, injuring some passengers.
“They also invaded Mchia where they slaughtered eight people.”
The Chairman of the local government, Rev Adagbe Jonathan, told our correspondent on Monday that seven people were killed and several others were still missing.
He stated, “It is true that armed herders in coordination with Jukun militias attacked my people yesterday (Sunday) around 9 p.m.
“With the assistance of police officers, we were able to collect five corpses Sunday night and two corpses this morning (Monday). They also shot at a commercial truck, injuring two persons.
“As I am talking to you now, the two people who sustained injuries have been taken to hospital at Anyim but many people are still missing.”
The council chairman, who said he was on his way to report the event to the security adviser, Joseph Har, said the attackers were armed herders recruited by Jukun militants.
Attempts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful because calls to her phone were not returned.
