Millions lost as fire gut makeshift structures in Lekki

On Sunday night, a fire razed some makeshift structures in the Ikate-Elegushi region of Lekki, Lagos State, saving several lives.

The fire spread to makeshift structures around Star Road, Horizon Heights, Ikate-Elegushi, and Lekki Lagos.

Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday.

According to her, the incident comprised residential improvised constructions that covered around an acre of property.

She said firefighters used defensive firefighting tactics to keep the fire from spreading to affluent buildings.

“Notably, the fire was challenging to control due to the involvement of 65 camp gas canisters, which posed an explosion risk. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties.

“Investigation into the cause of the fire revealed that it originated from one of the rooms within shanties behind an estate before extending to nearby structures. Collaborative efforts from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, estate fire department, and the Nigerian Police Force ensured a rapid and coordinated response, effectively preventing any loss of life or injuries,” she said.
