Nationwide blackout looms as TCN joins labour strike
Following the proclamation of an indefinite strike by organized labour unions, electricity workers have shut down the national grid.
On Tuesday, Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for Transmission Company of Nigeria, verified this exclusively to Platinum Times.
According to her, electrical workers, led by the National Union of electrical Employees (NUEE), withdrew their services at 11:20 a.m. on Monday, resulting in a nationwide blackout.
“Electricity workers are NLC members; they’ve followed the directive by organized labour to withdraw their services from Tuesday”, she stated.
Platinum Times has learned that the Federal Capital Territory and its surrounding areas are facing a power outage.
Remember that the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress declared a statewide indefinite strike to begin on Tuesday, despite a court ruling prohibiting the unions from doing so.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency said strike action by unions constituted a brazen defiance of court orders and a lack of respect for the justice.
As a result, the government stated its displeasure that the nation’s economy and social activities should not suffer as a result of any labor leader’s personal interests.
According to Platinum Times, the unions issued a nationwide strike notice last week in response to an assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero on November 1, 2023, in Imo State.
