Numerous employees and pensioners observed the Jummah prayer on Friday at the gate to the Oyo State government secreteriat under the auspices of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, and the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, respectively.

Workers and pensioners in the State have been protesting since Monday, according to Platinum Times Nigeria.

The workers’ demands include paying wage deductions, providing workers with palliatives, reviewing pension allowances upward, paying leave bonuses, paying gratuities to retirees whose benefits have stagnated since the year 2021, and releasing promotion letters for the years 2021 and 2022.

They insisted that they would keep protesting until Engineer Seyi Makinde, the state governor, spoke to them.

According to our correspondent, Muslims who were employees or pensioners on Friday observed the Jummah prayer at the State Secretariat’s gate.

Since the demonstration started, the Secretariat’s main entrance has been closed, which has impeded the ability of vehicles to travel freely around the region.

Workers were told not to return to the State Secretariat to finish the day’s work or participate in the demonstration.

Vice Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council (Public Service), Comrade Olanipekun Oluwaseun, stated that if the governor had appeared to address the employees, the Jumat service performed at the secretariat’s main gate may not have been required.

Makinde was urged to address their requests by Comrade Kayode Martin, the NLC’s State Chairman.

He stated that the union would not end the protests if the demands were not met.

He added that the union would convene a congress meeting to assess the protests and determine the best course of action.
