Panic in Benue as bandits assassinate livestock guard’s commander
The assassination of a commander of the Benue State Livestock Guard in the neighborhood of Tine-nune over the weekend increased panic in Ukum LGA, Benue State.
Over the past two months, unidentified gunmen have killed numerous vulnerable civilians and security officers in the region.
Jarule Likita, Commander of the Benue State Livestock Guard (BSLG), was shot multiple times in the chest by his assailants, according to an eyewitness who spoke to DAILY POST on Monday in Makurdi but requested anonymity out of fear of being attacked.
The unnamed gunmen assaulted the BSLG commander at Tine-nune hamlet in Ukum LGA about 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, killing him there, the eyewitness continued, adding that since then, locals have fled the area out of fear of additional attacks.
The insider also said that Mr. Likita’s murder marked the fifth assassination of BNLG leaders in the region, raising suspicions that there may be a reason for the frequent killings of livestock guards that may only be known to the BNLG and criminals.
In the meantime, Platinum Times‘s attempts to get the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Benue command, SP Sewuese Anene, to confirm the killing were unsuccessful since she was unable to answer or return her phone at the time this story was filed.
