Prioritize constitutional, electoral reforms – Atiku to NASS

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has encouraged Nigeria’s National Assembly to prioritize electoral reforms.

Despite the shortcomings of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated during the 2015 presidential elections that democracy remains the finest form of government.

He made this known during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council Nigeria (IPAC), on Tuesday in Abuja.

“I call on the National Assembly to prioritise constitutional and electoral reforms, in particular electronic voting reforms, to ensure transparent elections and protect our democracy.

“I believe democracy, despite its flaws, is the best form of government, and I am committed to working with others in providing its preservation in Nigeria,” Atiku told the gathering.

He emphasized the importance of defending the country’s democracy because there was no other option.

Former Vice President Olusegun Obasanjo, who lost in the polls and in the courts to APC President Bola Tinubu, expressed alarm about the “APC’s actions, which are leading Nigeria towards a one-party dictatorship.”

He asked the IPAC, chaired by Yabagi Sani, to assemble opposition parties in order to form a more formidable front against this menace.

He also chastised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for poor election management, citing differences in voter turnout, particularly in off-cycle elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo states.
