Rivers Assembly gets new Chief whip, Majority Leader

Major Jack (PDP, Akuku Toru 1) and Frankline Nwabochi (PDP, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni 1) have emerged as the Rivers House of Assembly’s Chief Whip and Majority Leader, respectively.

Following an election by 27 members during Wednesday’s session at the Assembly chamber, the new house leaders appeared and took the oath of office.

Speaker Martins Amaewhule (PDP, Obio/Akpor 1) thanked the officers while also charging them to stay devoted to their new responsibilities.

The “Financial Autonomy Bill, 2023” has also received a second reading.

The Speaker emphasized the importance of the law and expressed his belief that if passed, the governor will sign it.

The Speaker, on the other hand, claimed that Governor Siminialayi Fubara had withheld monies intended for Assembly management in November.

He told the house that it will continue its constitutional functions regardless of unfavorable distractions.

The bill has also been forwarded to the House Committee on Public Accounts for hearings and further review.

According to NAN, the 32-member house has been divided into two factions since the impeachment of Majority Leader Edison Ehie in October.

While Martins Amaewhule had 26 members, Edison Ehie had only four.
