UNICAL: Students on the run as armed men storm Malabor hostel

Following attacks on the Malabor Republic hostels on Saturday night by masked gunmen, several University of Calabar students are said to have fled the campus.
Many reportedly fled on Sunday out of concern that the armed men would come back.
Around nine o’clock on Friday night, there was an armed invasion that went on for more than 30 minutes without campus security becoming involved.
The Malabites claim that the gunmen in Hall 4 were successful in taking several student phones and money.
“The armed gang successfully operated in Room 228, 227, and 232 and was shooting sporadically,” a victim who gave her name as Helen Akpan stated. The sound of their firearms instilled panic and anxiety.
Numerous students and business owners in the Republic are now afraid as a result of the sad tragedy.
The results revealed that several of the students who were robbed were from different disciplines.
Offre Sharon from the Medicine department (CUMSA DOI Elect), Joshua Bassey from the Anatomy department, Bartolomeo Atekon from Banking and Finance, Ekpendu Theophilus, Jeremiah Edet, and Chinonso Collins from Civil Engineering were a few among them. A student leader who went by the name Peter claimed that the thieves made off with their power banks, laptops, and mobile phones.
The pupils were unable to act because guns were pointed at them, according to an eyewitness.
Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Tony Eyang and SUG President Kachi Akwo both denounced the attacks on the defenseless students.
The police department has not yet responded to the incident.
