We’ve recovered nine bodies so far – NSEMA gives update on Niger boat mishap

Nine lifeless bodies have been discovered from a boat disaster in  Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, last week.

Remember that ten people, mostly traders, were reported deceased in a boat accident on Thursday, November 16.

Alhaji Salihu Garba, the Head of Relief and Rehabilitation at the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA, told NAN on Sunday that nine of the ten bodies had been retrieved so far.

The victims were reportedly transporting items from Zongoru Community in Bassa Ward to Gijiwa ahead of the Friday market in Kuta, Shiroro LGA headquarters, when the unfortunate tragedy occurred.

At least 34 people were claimed to be on board, ten of whom died, while the remaining 22 were recovered by local divers.

Farida Muntari, Sharhabila Sagir, Bubakar Sadiq, Na’ima Ibrahim, Amina, Safaratu Ibrahim, Sadiq Ibrahim, and Rafiya Yakubu were among those who died, according to Garba.

He stated that the agency had yet to identify two of the deceased, adding that they were all from Zangoro.

He went on to say that when the boat capsized, there were 24 male and female adults and 10 male and female children on board.
