Xenophobia? – ‘Don’t come back’- S’Africans reportedly threaten Nigerian goalkeeper, Nwabali
Stanley Nwabali, the Super Eagles goalkeeper, has reportedly been threatened by South Africans not to return to his club, Chippa United, after his exploits against the country.
Nwabali, who has impressed for the Super Eagles in the AFCON so far, currently plays for South African club Chippa United.
Former Super Eagles international Idah Peterside revealed the threats during an interview with Channels Television on Thursday.
Peterside stated that some fans had already told the Super Eagles shot-stopper not to return to Chippa United following the competition.
He stated, however, that there have just been threats and no violence has occurred.
According to reports, some South Africans are upset because the goalkeeper prevented their team from reaching the finals.
Nwabali excelled in Wednesday’s semi-final against Bafana Bafana.
During regulation time, the goalkeeper stopped three South African players’ attempts before saving two penalty kicks in the shootout.
Meanwhile According to media sources, Chippa United manager Siviwe Mpengesi issued a statement on Thursday congratulating Nwabali for his performance, which helped Nigeria defeat Bafana 4-2 on penalties.
Nwabali was chosen man of the match after saving Teboho Mokoena and Evidence Makgopa’s penalties. After extra time, the game was tied at one.
“The club wishes to extend its congratulations to Stanley Nwabali for his extraordinary achievement in reaching the Afcon final and for also earning the man of the match award. Our support for you remains steadfast. You have represented the Chippa United brand admirably and we are immensely proud of you. We will be rooting for you in the final against Ivory Coast on Sunday,” Mpengesi said in the statement.
