2023 WWC: After red card FIFA bans Lauren James for rest of the tournament

After receiving a red card against Nigeria, England midfielder Lauren James will not participate in the 2023 Women’s World Cup again.

James was sent off in the 70th minute for stamping on Michelle Alozie while the score was still 0-0.

Before being instructed to examine the VAR on-pitch monitor, the referee first brandished a yellow.

Even though England played the entire extra period with only 10 men, they ultimately prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout.

James, however, has already played her final World Cup match due to the unwarranted stamp, as dismissals for violent behavior are followed by a three-match suspension.

FIFA rules state:

“A player will be suspended for at least three matches for violent conduct; at least three matches or an appropriate period of time for assault, including elbowing, punching, kicking, biting, spitting or hitting an opponent or a person other than a match official.”

England has a maximum of three fixtures to play as they have qualified for the quarter-finals.
