Referee abuse: Van Dijk gets fresh ban, fined £100,000

The Football Association has given Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk an additional ban and a fine of £100,000 for verbally insulting match officials after receiving a red card during their 2-1 victory over Newcastle last month.

Van Dijk was dismissed for a foul on Alexander Isak that the official determined prevented the Newcastle striker from having a clear chance to score.

The Dutchman was spotted cursing at the fourth official after refusing to leave the field right away.

Van Dijk was also punished by an impartial panel with an additional game suspension and a fine after pleading guilty to violating FA Rule E3.1.

An FA statement said:

“Virgil van Dijk has been suspended for one match and fined £100,000 for breaching FA Rule E3.1 during Liverpool’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United on Sunday 27 August.

“The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute, and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission.

“Full written reasons for this case will be published in due course.”

Van Dijk will now miss Liverpool’s Premier League trip to Wolves on September 16.
