INEC is a monumental disgrace – PDP chieftain Chidoka

Osita Chidoka, a PDP leader, has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the way it handled the just concluded Presidential election.

Chidoka criticized INEC for being unable to electronically transmit real-time election results.

He made this claim while participating in Sunday Politics on Channels Television.

“INEC is a monumental disgrace. INEC is an organisation I am ashamed to be associated with as a Nigerian.

“I came on this programme and called for third-party verification of the INEC system so that we are sure that on election day what is going to happen that day would not lead to a glitch. On election day, INEC said there was a glitch.

“Despite not testing the system, it is a shame that INEC went to court to argue that not complying with its regulation does not make it a ground to cancel an election,” Chidoka said.

He continued by saying that INEC’s struggles with this matter reflect poorly on the country in the eyes of other nations and questioned why it was unable to follow the example of nations like India and Indonesia, who, in his opinion, have sizable populations but hold more effective elections.

According to a story in Platinum Times, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was declared the victor of the presidential election on February 25 after the PDP and Labour Party, LP, filed a challenge.

They requested that the court declare Tinubu’s victory invalid on the grounds that INEC did not transmit results in real time to the election portal.

The court has subsequently decided that INEC is free to choose how it wishes to communicate results, nevertheless.
