Man lands in jail for beheading farmer in Ondo

A 24-year-old labourer, Sunday Clement, was remanded in Olokuta Correctional Centre by an Akure Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly killing a 30-year-old farmer, Taye Alatoye.

Clement was accused of committing the offence on September 4, 2023, about 2:30 p.m. in Baba Odun Camp, Ofosu, in the state’s Odigbo Local Government Area.

Clement, who admitted to being high on narcotics, allegedly assaulted Alatoye on their trip to the property.

Clement was captured by authorities after the killing and charged with one count of murder.

Mary Adebayo, the police prosecutor, stated the court that the defendant’s acts violated Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 Vol. II Law of Ondo State, 2006.

Adebayo requested that the defendant be detained at the Olokuta Correctional Centre until the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP, during the remand application.

The defendant expressed regret and told the court that on the day of the event, he had consumed crystal methamphetamine, also known as ‘ice,’ before going to the farm.

Clement’s argument for lack of jurisdiction was rejected by Chief Magistrate Folasade Aduroja.

Aduroja granted the prosecutor’s motion and ordered the defendant’s remand in the custodial centre, as well as that the case file be duplicated and submitted to the DPP for advice.
