Flood ravages Yola North community in Adamawa
Anguwan Tana, a village in Yola North LGA, was inundated by overflow from the rivers Kilange and Faro on Thursday.
The state capital’s farming village is located on the banks of the River Benue, which runs through Yola.
Residents bemoaned the damage of their farms as a result of the strong flood.
Dr Mohammed Suleiman, Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, ADSEMA, said during a visit to the affected area on Friday that the people’s pain could have been avoided if they had followed warnings about impending flooding.
“We had warned them before the start of the rainy season when we received the prediction of flooding,” the ADSEMA chief said.
While emphasizing the need of constantly cooperating with the government, he guaranteed them of food and non-food relief supplies.
Malam Rabiu Ibrahim, the community’s ward head, blamed the disaster on insufficient drainage and urged the state government to assist.
“We have children, and the water is very dirty,” said Aisha Mohammed, a mother of ten. It is a health and environmental threat, so the government should please take action and relocate us to a safer location.”
“Despite the government’s warnings about the flood, we don’t have anywhere to go,” she added. We have no other options.”
