Nnamdi Kanu: Supreme Court to give judgment in charges against IPOB leader Dec 15
The Supreme Court set December 15 for a decision in the Federal Government’s appeal against a Court of Appeal decision that dropped criminal charges against Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu and ordered his release.
After hearing arguments from Kanu’s counsel, Mike Ozekhome SAN, and Tijani Gazali SAN, who represented the Federal Government, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun set the decision date.
While presenting its case, the Federal Government asked that the verdict of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which upheld seven count allegations against Kanu, be upheld so that he may be tried.
While opposing, Ozekhome stated that the Federal Government has been unjustly and unlawfully detaining Kanu since 2021.
He argued that the Court of Appeal’s decision to dismiss the charges against Kanu and order his immediate release be affirmed.
The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, dismissed the remaining seven-count criminal charges brought against Kanu by the Federal Government at the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 13, 2022, in a judgment in an appeal filed and defended by Ozekhome.
In an earlier judgement, the high court kept seven of the original 15 counts against Kanu after dismissing eight of the charges.
While dismissing eight accusations, Justice Binta Nyako ruled that Kanu must answer questions on seven others.
