What led me to leave DC United – Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney, a former player for Manchester United, has given his reasons for leaving MLS team DC United after a little over a year.
Rooney additionally disclosed that he declined a job offer last month.
Platinum Times reminds readers that after DC United’s 2-0 victory over New York City FC on Saturday, the club made the announcement that Rooney had left by mutual agreement.
Despite finishing the season with a victory over New York City, other outcomes prevented the team from qualifying for the MLS playoffs.
Rooney, who was rumored to be taking the Birmingham job last month, revealed in his post-game press conference that he had opted to resign from his position in order to spend more time with his family in the UK.
“I think it is just the right time. I think I have done everything I can to try and get the club into the playoffs,” Rooney said.
“And it’s not a single thing which has happened; it’s about timing in your career. I have really enjoyed my time here. I have had a lot of help from the owners. Everyone around the club has been a great help to me.
“But I just feel it is the right time for me to go back to England. Firstly, obviously, to see my family, I have not seen them for a long time.”
On the job offer he received a few weeks ago, the 37-year-old added: “I said to the owners I got offered a job four weeks ago, very close to my home in England. I turned that down because I wanted to push and do everything I can to make the playoffs here.”
