Ondo Assembly suspends impeachment process against Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa

The impeachment procedures against the state’s Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, have been suspended by the Ondo State House of Assembly.

The move was made in response to the unwillingness of the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola, to convene a panel to probe the controversial deputy governor.

Olatunji Oshati, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, announced the judgment on Friday evening.

According to him, the assembly would obey the court’s order, causing the impeachment process to be temporarily halted.

“It is not about being arrogant with power, it is about holding public officers accountable. It also shows that the process of impeachment transcends the monopoly of the legislature as we can see that the judiciary has stalled it.

“This is to show that it is not about witch-hunting, it is about carrying out our oversight functions.”

The decision comes after the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olusegun Odusola, declined to set up a panel to probe the allegations against Aiyedatiwa as he cited subsisting court order.

The assembly had initiated impeachment proceedings based on 14 allegations leveled against the deputy governor.
