Senate confirms Musa Aliyu as ICPC chairman

Malam Musa Aliyu’s nomination to lead the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) has been approved by the Senate.

This came after a motion made on Thursday in the Committee of the Whole by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti).

Bamidele, who made the motion, asked the Senate to take President Bola Tinubu’s request—which confirmed Aliyu’s nomination as ICP Chairman—into consideration.

He stated that the request was made in compliance with the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) Establishment Act, 2000, specifically Section 3 (6).

Additionally, he asked the Senate to take Tinubu’s request into account in order to approve the nomination of Prof. Gaji Dantata and Mr. Saka Suleiman to the Federal Judicial Service Commission.

He stated that the request complied with the terms of Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, Section 154 (1) and (3), and paragraph 12 (f).

The Senate waived its regulation to enable the nominees and other guests to enter the chamber prior to their screening.

The nominees were escorted into the chamber by Senator Abdullahi Gumel, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters (Senate).

The nominees then provided highlights of their professional experiences and career profiles.

As Jigawa State’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Aliyu stated that he began extensive judicial reforms in September 2019 while serving in that capacity.

Following that, the Senate approved the nomination of Mr. Saka Suleiman and Prof. Gaji Dantata to the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC), representing the states of Kano and Kwara, respectively.

In his remarks, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who oversaw plenary, described their appointment as a call to service.

He asked them to put their all into serving the nation and to avoid disappointing the President or Nigerians.
